This blog chronicles my adventures in Korea while I am a teacher in a private school teaching English

A woman was describing a class at a language institute that she was in to me. She told me that along with herself were several other people intent on studying English from various parts of Asia. One woman was from Japan, she was from Korea, and another gentleman was from Thailand. They all were practicing their pronunciation to go abroad.

The woman told me that the man from Thailand had a notoriously difficult accent to comprehend. His name was too long for him to transcribe into English, and the other students in the class couldn't pronounce it correctly, so he truncated it to the first syllable. Thus, the people in his class called him "Hut".

Since Hut's pronunciation was so bad, he used an electronic dictionary to add in communication. Since the dictionary could speak the words Hut couldn't pronounce, he would use it to assist him in conversation. Since it was so useful, he called it his "Talking Dic' ", short for "Talking Dictionary".

When one of the other students had to ask him a question they would say "Hut! Hut! What are you saying? Get out your Talking Dic' ! We don't understand you! Get out your Talking Dic' ! "

The teacher of the class was an older woman that didn't have the heart to tell her students what they were saying. She just giggled every time the class asked Hut to use his "Talking Dic' ".
