Marathon

Marathon (76k image)

One of my adult students recommended that I watch Marathon. It's a movie about an autistic boy and his love of running. It was highly recommended by anyone that had seen it, but my student's choices in the past were hit or miss. I gave it a pass until today, but I regret not getting the word out about this movie before. Simply put, it's an amazing story and a fantastic film.

I won't spoil the plot no matter how badly I want to share this fantastic movie.

While ultimately heartwarming in the end, seeing the characters struggle with the weight of autism in their family was heartbreaking at the same time. The mother character in particular was really well written, and seeing how she comes to the realization about her true intentions was a twist I didn't expect. It showed more depth to the characters treatment of others than I expected.

There is no way you could help being moved by this film. It's got an inner beauty and honesty about it that makes it a must see. Million Dollar Baby was the only thing close to getting an heartfelt emotional reaction out of me this year from Hollywood. Sin City was good, but only for the style, gore, and angst.

Korean films consistently pull at my emotions much more effectively. I'd say Oasis still ranks as the saddest movie I've ever seen, while Samaria is still high at number three.
